Beall Has Made Education a Priority and Fought for Public Education, Say LeadersSan Jose, CA — Assemblyman Jim Beall announced today several key educational endorsements for his race for state senate. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and a number of key education leaders, including County Superintendent Dr. Charles Weis, County Board of Education President Joe DiSalvo, Santa Clara County Board of Education Members Leon Beauchman and Julia Hoover–Smoot, and dozens of local school board members and officials from around the county have thrown their support behind Beall for State Senate. "Throughout his career in public service, Jim Beall has made California's public schools a priority and worked to ensure that every child has access to a high-quality education — no matter their background," said Superintendent Torlakson. "I am proud to support Jim for the State Senate and look forward to continue working with him as an advocate for California's public schools." Beall has been honored by numerous organizations during his career for his service on behalf of Santa Clara County's children and youth, especially for his strong support of programs that benefit at-risk youth, the disabled and children with mental illnesses. Recently, the Special Education Local Plan Area Administrators (SELPA) honored him as their Legislator of the Year. Beall has also been a strong supporter of California's public colleges and universities, authoring and sponsoring numerous pieces of legislation to make college more affordable for working families and fund these institutions without fee increases. "In the Assembly, Jim Beall has fought to protect funding for public schools, preventing cuts to academic programs like math, science and reading in our County schools," said County Board of Education President DiSalvo. "As our State Senator, I know he will continue to improve our local schools and make education a top priority." A complete current list of education leaders who have endorsed Beall, including dozens of current and former local elected school board members and officials, is included with this release or can be found on his campaign website at jimbeall.com. Assemblyman Beall was born and raised in San Jose, one of ten children who all attended California colleges and universities. He is a graduate of Bellarmine College Preparatory and San Jose State University. He served on the San Jose City Planning Commission before becoming the youngest person, at age 28, ever to be elected to the San Jose City Council. He served 14 years on the council and in 1994, he was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Beall was elected to the California Assembly in 2006 and re-elected by wide margins in 2008 and 2010. Over his 30 years in public service, he has represented nearly half of SD15.
